ASK. DON’T DEMAND
Asking for guidance requires a sincere, open heart. If some people err on the side of not asking, there are others who arrogantly demand what they are not able to receive.
I experienced this several times as I was doing a lecture series across the country for The Psychic Pathway. On two occasions people approached me and said something like “I want a teacher like the ones you had. How can I contact them?” When I explained that both of them had passed away from years before and I had no personal knowledge of other master teachers I could recommend, they became indignant.
“Why not? Isn’t that your job?!” one young man demanded. Another woman got very upset and accused me of not directing her to someone because I was selfish.
When I questioned these people about what steps they had taken to prepare for a teacher, they both looked at me in an odd way. “What do you mean?” they asked.
I answered with the following story.
There was once a young man who had heard of a holy master living on a remote mountain in the Himalayas who could teach enlightenment. Desiring to learn, the young man bought an airplane ticket and eventually made his way to the master’s hut. He arrived at the master’s door, knocked, and announced that he desired enlightenment.
The master answered the door and, after giving him the once-over, shut the door in the young man’s face without saying a word.
Surprised and angry, the young man went away, only to come back two days later. Pounding on the master’s door, he said, “I spent money to get here! I am ready to be enlightened!”
The door remained closed.
Three more days passed, and the young man pounded angrily on the door again, shouting, “What kind of master are you? I think you won’t answer the door and teach me because you are a phony!”
Once again he was met with an unopened door and silence.
Weeks passed, and every day the young man returned and tried to get the master to receive him. Finally, one day he asked the master to please teach him. The master’s door remained shut.
Weeks passed into months, and still the young man had no success. One day, as the young man was about to turn away from the closed door, the master stepped out and began to walk down the path. The astonished young man rushed to the master’s side, almost falling over his words as he walked along with him.
“Please teach me, master. I’m sorry for my rudeness. I’m very sincere. Just tell me what to so.” And on and on. All the while the master was silent.
Eventually they approached a bridge over a babbling brook. The young man kept talking, and suddenly the master grabbed the young man by his shirt collar, pushed him to the shore, and shoved his head underwater.
The young man struggled with all his might, but the master was stronger and kept the young man’s head submerged. Finally the man summoned all his energy and shot up from the water like a geyser.
